About Juttu Extensions

Sri Srinivas Prathipati, founder of Juttu Extensions

Here’s more about Juttu Extensions — where we started, how we got here, and what we stand for. Juttu Extensions is the retail brand of Tirumala Human Hair Impex LLP (THHI), a family business built over more than two decades in the Indian hair industry. Here’s our story — where we started, how we got here, and what we stand for.

In the late 1990s, my father, Parthasarathi Prathipati, visited a hair processing factory that had applied for a loan at the bank where he worked. He saw an industry with real potential that was disorganised and struggling to communicate with overseas buyers. He encouraged my mother, Geeta Prathipati, then working as a secretarial officer at a publicly traded company, to explore the opportunity. She began consulting for these factories, connecting them with international importers, and helped several grow significantly over the following decade.

I was introduced to the world of Indian hair as a teenager, accompanying my mother’s clients to these factories during school and college vacations. After graduating, I took a corporate job in the ITES sector, completed a postgraduate degree in London, and returned to India in October 2009 to join my mother in consulting.

Building the business

In 2011, I formed a proprietorship and began trading hair directly rather than just consulting. I’d actually tried an online retail concept once before, in 2010, but international online payments weren’t practical yet in India at the time, and that early attempt had to close. It taught me the idea was right, but the timing wasn’t.

In 2016, my mother and I formed Tirumala Human Hair Impex LLP (THHI), partnering directly with our long-term associate and vendor rather than simply trading with them. The name comes from Tirumala, home to the largest ethical bank of human hair in the world — the temple our sourcing is built around, and the reason our retail brand is called Juttu Extensions (“Juttu” means “hair” in Telugu, the language spoken in the region).

We conceptualised Juttu Extensions in 2018, and officially launched the e-commerce site in the third quarter of 2019 with a limited product range, followed by our full catalog in February 2020 — just before the world changed with COVID-19. Despite the challenges of that period, including temple closures that caused raw hair shortages and price spikes, the activity we saw on the site during lockdown gave us the validation we needed to keep building the retail side of the business.

What we offer, and how

Today, our product line includes wigs (full lace, front lace, and closure), bundles, closures, frontals, clip-on sets, clip-on volumizers, halo extensions, tape extensions, keratin tip extensions, micro rings, and ponytail extensions — all built on genuine virgin Remy hair, sourced through temple donations in South India.

We ship worldwide from India, with free shipping to the US, Canada, UK, France, Spain, Germany, and other Western European countries on many products. We use minimal, sustainable, reusable cloth-bag packaging rather than the fancier single-use boxes common in the industry — a small choice that helps us keep prices lower and reduces waste. We’re not in a rush to scale for scale’s sake; every order gets individual attention, and we believe that shows in the product our customers receive.

On the wholesale side, we work with salons, distributors, and hair professionals — including clients we’ve retained since the very first proprietorship in 2011. We believe in educating buyers rather than just quoting prices: every wholesale inquiry gets a personal conversation about hair quality, grading, and what to actually look for, because there’s a lot of misinformation in this industry that a five-minute call can clear up.

Recognition

In 2021, Juttu Extensions was named Best Human Hair Extensions Brand by LUX Life magazine’s Health, Beauty & Wellness Awards, and was separately featured by startup.info for our approach to ethical sourcing and affordable, direct-to-consumer hair extensions. What Juttu Extensions Stands For Today

The standard we hold ourselves to today is the same one this business was built on: genuine virgin Remy hair, honestly sourced, honestly described, and sold at a price that reflects real value rather than markup. That’s what “for the love of hair” has always meant to us.
