Why Hair Extensions Mat, and How Hard Water Makes It Worse
Short answer: Extensions usually mat because the hair is rubbed, left wet, or coated with mineral or product buildup. Hard water is a common cause, because minerals in the water leave a rough film on the hair. A water filter, gentle washing, enough conditioning time and a loose bedtime braid prevent most matting.
Matting is a tangle that has locked into a knot you cannot brush out. It starts near the roots or mid-lengths, where hair rubs most. Once it starts, it spreads.
What causes matting
- Friction. Hair rubbing against pillows, collars, scarves, bag straps and seat backs.
- Sleeping with loose hair. Movement during the night tangles the hair, mostly at the nape.
- Washing roughly. Scrubbing in circles or piling the hair on top of the head creates tangles.
- Going to bed with wet hair. Wet hair tangles more easily.
- Product buildup. Heavy oils, creams and sprays collect and glue strands together.
- Not brushing often enough. Small tangles left alone become mats.
- Hard water. Explained below.
Hard water and extensions
Hard water has a high mineral content, mainly calcium and magnesium. It is common across many US states. The minerals can leave a film on the hair. The hair then feels rough and dry, and strands cling to each other and tangle. Extensions do not get oils from your scalp, so they cannot recover from this by themselves, and the buildup stays until you remove it.
Signs hard water may be the cause:
- The hair feels rough or dull soon after washing
- Matting returns even after you wash and detangle carefully
- Your water leaves white marks on taps, glass or shower doors
What helps:
- Fit a water filter on the shower. This is what we recommend. A few of our clients had repeated matting that stopped after a water filter was fitted.
- Use sulphate-free shampoo.
- Condition properly. Leave the conditioner on for at least 10 minutes, then rinse well.
How to prevent matting
- Brush gently, every day. Hold the hair above the area you are brushing and start at the ends, then work up.
- Braid loosely at night. Use a loose braid or low ponytail with a soft tie. Avoid sleeping with loose hair.
- Wash less, wash gently. Let water run down the hair. Do not scrub or rub in circles. Over-washing dries the hair, and dry hair tangles.
- Detangle before you wash, not after.
- Dry fully before bed.
- Go light on products. A little leave-in conditioner on the ends is enough.
If your hair is already matted
- Do not pull or force a brush through it.
- Work on the mat while the hair is damp and conditioned. Use your fingers first, then a wide-tooth comb, starting from the end of the mat.
- If the mat is tight at the root, stop. More force causes more damage.
- Treat the cause, or the mat will come back.
Blonde and coloured shades
Blonde and lightened hair is more fragile, so it tangles and mats more easily. Give it extra care: gentler washing, more conditioning, and a water filter if your water is hard.
Humid climates
In a humid climate the hair absorbs moisture and frizzes, which leads to tangles. Use a leave-in conditioner or anti-frizz serum, seal the ends with a light oil, and avoid over-washing.
Matting and double-drawn hair
Double-drawn hair tangles more than single-drawn hair. This is normal. It needs the same care as above, applied a little more often.
Does matting mean the hair is poor quality?
Not by itself. Care, water quality, climate and how the hair is worn all affect matting. In single-donor virgin Remy hair the cuticles all run in one direction, which helps reduce tangling, but no hair is free from matting if it is rubbed, left wet or covered in buildup. With good care, the hair can last 1 year or longer; some clients have had the same hair for 5 years. This is our experience and not a guarantee, as it depends on how the hair is looked after.
FAQ
Why does my hair extension mat at the root?
That is where hair rubs most, against pillows, collars and bag straps. A loose braid at night and daily gentle brushing help most.
Does hard water ruin hair extensions?
Hard water does not destroy the hair, but the mineral film makes it rough, dry and tangle-prone. A shower water filter reduces this.
How can I tell if I have hard water?
White chalky marks on taps, glass and shower doors, and soap that does not lather well, are common signs. Your water supplier can also tell you.
How often should I wash extensions?
As little as is comfortable. Over-washing dries the hair and makes tangling worse.
How long should I leave conditioner on?
At least 10 minutes for virgin Remy hair.
Can matted extensions be saved?
Often, if the mat is caught early. Work on it damp and conditioned, with fingers first and a wide-tooth comb, from the end of the mat. Do not force it.
Does blonde hair mat more?
Lightened hair is more fragile, so yes, it needs gentler handling.
Do heat tools cause matting?
Heat itself is not the usual cause. Hair can be heat-styled like your own hair; take extra care with blonde and coloured shades.
