How Long Do Hair Extensions Last? What Decides It
Short answer: With good care, human hair extensions made from single-donor virgin Remy hair can last 1 year or longer, depending on how the wearer looks after them. Some of our clients have had the same hair for 5 years. This is our experience, not a guarantee.
You will see much shorter numbers on other sites, such as 6 to 8 weeks. Those usually describe how often a stylist resets or moves up a particular attachment method, not how long the hair itself lasts. This guide is about the hair.
What decides how long extensions last
- The quality of the hair. Hair that is single-donor and virgin has not been through heavy chemical processing, so it starts stronger. Hair that has been heavily processed is weaker and needs more care. For example, we advise at least 10 minutes of conditioning for virgin Remy hair, and at least 20 minutes for other grades.
- How it is washed and conditioned. Sulphate-free shampoo, gentle washing and enough conditioning time protect the hair. Over-washing dries it out.
- Your water. Hard water leaves a mineral film that makes hair rough and tangle-prone, and it is one of the most common reasons hair mats. A shower water filter is what we recommend. See our guide to why hair extensions mat and how hard water makes it worse.
- How often it is worn and how it is handled. Hair worn every day, rubbed against pillows and collars, or left wet wears faster than hair that is brushed gently and braided loosely at night.
- Heat and colour. Virgin Remy hair can be heat-styled like your own hair. Blonde and coloured shades are weaker, so they need more care. Because virgin Remy hair has not been processed, it also takes colour more predictably than treated hair, but bleached hair is still weaker than the same hair in its natural colour.
- Climate. In humid weather the hair frizzes and tangles more. A leave-in conditioner or anti-frizz serum, a light oil on the ends, and not over-washing all help.
- Hair type. Double-drawn hair tangles more than single-drawn hair, so it needs the same care a little more often.
What you can do to make extensions last longer
- Use sulphate-free shampoo, and wash less often and more gently.
- Condition for at least 10 minutes (virgin Remy), then rinse well.
- Fit a water filter if your water is hard.
- Brush gently every day, from the ends up.
- Braid loosely at night. Do not sleep with wet or loose hair.
- Use few products, and keep heavy oils and creams away from the roots.
- Take extra care with blonde and coloured shades.
- Follow the rest of our general care tips.
Signs it may be time to replace the hair
There is no fixed date. Look at the hair itself:
- Matting keeps returning at the roots even when your care and water are good
- The ends have become thin or sparse
- The hair stays dry, rough or brittle however much you condition it
- It no longer holds a style as it used to
Does the type of extension change how long the hair lasts?
The hair is the same whether it is sold as bundles, clip-ins or keratin tips, and the care rules above apply to all of them. How long an attachment stays in place, and how often it needs adjusting, depends on the method and on your stylist. For our products, see human hair bundles, clip-in extensions and keratin tip extensions.
What “virgin Remy” means for lifespan
In virgin Remy hair the cuticles all run in the same direction, and the hair has not been coloured or chemically treated. Hair like this tangles less and handles care better than hair that has been stripped and coated. It does not make the hair last for ever, and care still decides most of the result. FAQ
How long do human hair extensions last?
With good care, the hair can last 1 year or longer, depending on how you look after it. Some of our clients have had the same hair for 5 years. This is our experience, not a guarantee.
Why do some sites say extensions last only 6 to 8 weeks?
That figure usually refers to how often a stylist resets or moves up a particular attachment method, not to the life of the hair.
How often should I replace my extensions?
There is no fixed date. Replace the hair when matting keeps returning, the ends have thinned, or it stays dry however well you care for it.
Does heat styling shorten the life of extensions?
The hair can be heat-styled like your own hair. Take extra care with blonde and coloured shades, which are weaker.
Does hard water shorten the life of extensions?
It can. The mineral film from hard water makes hair rough and prone to matting. A shower water filter reduces this.
Do extensions last longer if I wear them less often?
Hair that is handled less usually wears less. How you look after it matters most.
Does blonde hair last as long as darker shades?
Blonde and lightened hair is weaker, so it needs gentler handling to last as long.
Do you guarantee how long the hair will last?
No. Lifespan depends on how each wearer looks after the hair, so we do not guarantee it.
